What you can see on a flight

How live flight tracking works

Most aircraft broadcast their identity and position continuously over ADS-B, a short-range radio protocol designed for air traffic safety. Ground receivers and satellite constellations pick up those broadcasts and forward them to aggregation networks. Tengri consumes that aggregated feed and renders it on the globe, refreshing positions every few seconds.

Because ADS-B is a broadcast standard rather than a private data link, flight tracking is legal and widely used by aviation enthusiasts, journalists, researchers and the airlines themselves. Some state and military aircraft do not broadcast, or broadcast without identity, and therefore will not appear.

Searching for a specific flight

The search box accepts a flight number such as TK1980, an aircraft registration such as TC-JJE, or an airport code. Matching aircraft are highlighted on the globe and the camera flies to them. Search works across the whole live dataset rather than only what is currently in view, so you do not need to know where in the world to look first.

Flight tracking in context

The reason to track flights on a combined map rather than a dedicated aviation site is context. A diversion becomes easier to explain when the storm system, the volcanic ash advisory or the airspace closure is on the same screen.
