How satellite tracking works

Satellite positions are not broadcast the way aircraft positions are. Instead, orbits are described by two-line element sets (TLEs) published by space surveillance networks and distributed publicly through CelesTrak. Software propagates those elements forward in time to compute where a satellite is right now.

Accuracy depends on how recently the element set was updated. For most objects this yields positions accurate to within a few kilometres, which is more than sufficient for visualisation, pass prediction and situational awareness.

Why do satellite positions not come from a live signal?

Satellites do not broadcast their position the way aircraft do over ADS-B. Their orbits are published as element sets by space surveillance networks, and tracking software calculates current position from those elements rather than receiving it directly.
