How military aircraft are identified
Military flights that broadcast identity usually do so with recognisable callsign prefixes — RCH and REACH for US strategic airlift, ASCOT for the Royal Air Force, GAF for the German Air Force, NATO for alliance assets, and dozens more. Tengri maintains a prefix table and combines it with aircraft type codes to flag military traffic automatically rather than relying on the operator field alone.
This is why a C-17 flying as REACH appears as military while the same airframe type in civilian charter service does not get mislabelled.

Important limits
Military aviation OSINT is built on an incomplete picture by design. Combat aircraft on operational missions do not broadcast. Many air forces transmit only when transiting civil airspace. What you see is the traffic that has chosen, for air safety reasons, to be visible.
Treat absence as absence of evidence, never as evidence of absence. The useful signal is usually a change in the visible baseline, not a single flight.
